Liverpool are Champions of England.
Champions of Europe.
Champions of the World.
I’ve waited 30 years to see us lift the English title. My entire adult life.
But we’ve done it.
Liverpool FC, under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp, have done it.
30 years of failed attempts. Different managers. Good signings. Bad signings. Lots of money spent.
Then, in October 2015, things changed.
Liverpool FC decided to appoint a certain German manager, who, over the following 4+ years, would transfer the team and the club back into Champions.
How did Jurgen do this?
For me, it is all in their mindset.
A decision to overhaul the playing team, including back-office staff.
A commitment to a high-pressure counter-pressing style of football.
Understanding it was a long-term strategy, one, which if successful, would lead to all of the rewards they sought.
A focus on the club. The humans behind the club. And its loyal supporters.
It worked. And last night they were crowned Champions of England.
Why am I writing about this?
Clearly, I have woken this morning full of beans and want to share my love and passion for Liverpool.
But, and more importantly, what Liverpool have done resonates with the way we deliver financial planning here at Longhurst.
How?
Through mindset.
Successful investors know that you must take the view that it is a long-term strategy.
That to ensure their version of financial success, they must first ensure they have the right professional advice team in place.
A team who will then help them to understand the best playing styles to adopt (evidence-based investing, long-term focus, own the Great Companies of World) whilst avoiding the worst styles to adopt (market timing, stock picking, crystal ball gazing).
Financial planning is all about the journey. Whether it is to secure your version of financial independence. Or to leave a meaningful legacy to your loved ones. Or, perhaps, to break free of your working shackles and spend more time doing the things you enjoy most.
Your success, and ultimate happiness, will come from mindset.
Mindset to put in place the right foundation bricks to launch from.
And mindset to ensure you stick to the plan, no matter how difficult it is at times.
Liverpool fans rejoice every game by singing the famous song ‘You’ll never walk alone.’
