Project Longhurst: More Trees – Success in Tanzania

Chris Broome – Chartered Financial Planner

We promised to bring you regular updates on our corporate charitable giving programme, ‘Project Longhurst’, which aims to support organisations involved in humanitarian, animal welfare, environmental and financial education causes.

This month’s update comes from our Environmental partner, More Trees.

We share their update below, about the amazing work achieved last year in Tanzania.

Located in East Africa, Tanzania combines diverse landscapes and rich wildlife with a strong cultural heritage.

It’s also home to a variety of lush forests, that contribute to the country’s vast biodiversity and ecological balance.

Dominated by Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, and featuring a scenic coastal landscape, Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro and Tanga regions support a range of ecosystems.

However, challenges including traditional ginger farming, extreme poverty and climate change have triggered substantial losses in trees, vegetation and water, which have caused a consequential overexploitation of nearby forests and nature reserves.

This initiative involves planting 4.5 million native and agroforestry trees, aiming to restore the significant loss of trees and biodiversity by providing locals with diverse tree species that generate alternative sources of income, food and forestry materials.

2024 – a year of achievements

We take a look back on some of the amazing work achieved last year with More Trees at our Tanzania Project.
