Where to Celebrate Christmas
Sian Pages – Travel Planner
With many clients opting to travel at Christmas, rather than celebrate at home, it occurred to me that if we trade mistletoe for lush tropical rainforests, bustling shops for vibrant souks, and mince pies for decadent baklava, we can have an altogether different and exhilarating holiday time with our loved ones.
From South Africa’s thrilling game reserves to the otherworldly landscapes of the Canary Islands, discover some of my favourite Christmas getaways.
1. Costa Rica
Escape the winter blues and embrace the golden glow of sun-drenched days on an unforgettable wildlife adventure in Costa Rica this Christmas.
Imagine wandering through misty cloud forests, catching glimpses of the mesmerising quetzal’s emerald feathers shimmering in the treetops, or spotting leisurely sloths tucked away in lush greenery on our Costa Rica Wildlife Tour.
For a dose of adrenaline and family fun, channel your inner explorer as you navigate jungle waterways and tackle exhilarating rapids on our Family Costa Rica Rainforest and Wildlife Adventure.
2. South Africa
Swap snow for sunshine and head for warmer temperatures in South Africa.
Picture yourself sipping world-class wines in the Cape Winelands, spotting the Big Five on a thrilling safari, or lounging on pristine beaches with the warm Indian Ocean lapping at your feet.
Whether it’s adventure, luxury, or unforgettable family moments, South Africa offers a festive season like no other.
3. Canary Islands
Opting for a warmer climate, gives you access to dormant volcanoes, ancient lava fields and world class stargazing (in Tenerife).
Perhaps welcome in a New Year, by hiking to watch the sunrise in Garajonay National Park.
In the Canary Islands, Christmas Eve tends to be the biggest celebration, where families enjoy the night out with their loved ones, whilst eating a festive seafood dinner.
4. Jordan
Escape the crowds and discover Jordan’s treasures at Christmas. With cooler temperatures and quieter landmarks, it’s the perfect time to explore.
Wander through the dramatic Siq Valley gorge to behold the iconic 1st-century Treasury in Petra, the legendary ‘Rose City’.
Follow the footsteps of ancient Nabateans along old spice routes, or make unforgettable family memories, riding camels across the cinematic landscapes of Wadi Rum before falling asleep under a canopy of stars in a desert camp.
5. Scandinavia
Ok, this is a wide net to cast, but the reason is simple. If you want fully immersive, Christmas card perfection, then any of the Scandinavian destinations will fulfill your wish.
From their hygge traditions to a blanket of snow making everything feel festive – it is like stepping into a ‘Winter Tales’ book. Everywhere you turn, people are clad in festive apparel. All the shops and restaurants take on a warm and cosy feel, decorated in the Nordic Christmas style and you can visit a multitude of Christmas markets too.
And yes, I’ve said it before, but you may also get the chance to see the Aurora Borealis. So what’s not to love!
