The Experience Age
‘The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.’
Jack London
At Longhurst we believe that we now live in something we refer to as the Experience Age. One that isn’t dictated by your age.
One where you want to have something that you’re retiring to, rather than something that you’re retiring from.
One where you don’t want to retire because you hate your job. You want to retire because you have something else you’d rather be doing that will give you purpose and passion.
So, if you’re reading this thinking ‘You know what, you’re right, I’m not ready to retire,’ then don’t despair. Longhurst is here to help.
Retirement (retreating from purposeful activities) isn’t the ideal outcome. Financial Independence – which is where paid work is optional; you work because you want to; and not because you have to; is a much more fulfilling
Therefore, two things to consider, as you think over what your Experience Age will consist of, are: (1) What do you want to do?, and (2) How are you going to fund it?
You may want to consider the following activities:
- Continue with your current career; maybe on reduced hours
- Time with your spouse, family, and friends
- Time to yourself
- Exercise
- Hobbies
- Travel
- Volunteer work
- Mentoring in your local community
- Potentially the most important – finding another vocation
At Longhurst, we will help you to find balance between vacation with vocation.
We’ll help you find meaningful engagement in something that brings value to others, and meaning to you.
And, on occasion, we will encourage you to be selfish. Sometimes very selfish.
